Fixing a Charge Off On my Credit REport?

Question by hopehome4: Fixing a Charge Off On my Credit REport?
I had a credit card charge off almost 4 years ago but in 2008 I finally get my stuff together and paid off the amount owed anyways. How do I go about fixing my credit now? Can I write the institution and ask them to write a letter to the credit bureaus to remove the charge off/ paid full? Does this work and is this how the creditors and lawyers do it? Thank You

Paying back charged-off credit card debt does not help your credit rating. The charge-off stays for 7 years from the date of default…even if you pay it back in full. The main damage of the charge-off should be over by now.

To help build (or rebuild) a good credit history, it can be beneficial to get a secured credit card, the kind where you put up a security deposit and your credit limit is equal to that. Carry a small balance and pay it off over time. You can use this to gradually rebuild a history of on-time payments that will be reported to the credit bureaus. Your best bet is to get one through a credit union, as they have the best deals for secured cards.

First thing to do is get all three of your credit reports. You are allowed by law one free each year from each credit reporting agency.

Review your reports to make sure all of the information is accurate. dispute any inaccurate information. If you have any collections or delinquents on the reports, contact those companies and see if you can resolve those collections or delinquent accounts.

You might also consider going to a credit counseling service. However you need to be cautious when choosing one of these services. Many times they are just bill collections places that will take your money and not really help you repair your credit.

US Credit Rating: Everything the President and Congress Know About Fixing It and Are Willing to Do About It

This book is the most comprehensive guide to everything that the US government knows (and is willing to do) to fix the US Credit rating. In other words, absolutely nothing. This is a blank book, a gag book, a book to point out that our government is out of touch with reality, a book to point out that their relationships with their parties have become more important than the country… to them. We have politicians who are willing to spend or give away our money and tax us more in return wh
