Negative items and repairing credit?

I have 8 items that are negative on my credit report. However things are paid off. I just opened a secured card to make payments on and increase my score. Can I have a decent credit score with negative items on my report? If I establish better credit now, will that balance things out until the negatives are removed?

it will take some time but the answer is yes. The older the negative items on your report the less they will weigh on your credit score.
